Russian Hill Family Home

Nestled amidst the quaint neighborhood of Russian Hill in San Francisco, California, this project for a young international family puts an innovative touch on this previously existing traditional Victorian home. With a nod to European sensibilities and lifestyle, every inch of space is utilized efficiently, reflecting a minimalist ethos. Storage solutions were ingeniously integrated into the design, albeit sparingly, honoring the couple's preference for functionality over excess.

The heartbeat of this home lies on its top floor, while the private living spaces (two bedrooms, an office, and a playroom) for the couple and their two kids are on three lower levels, including a completed basement. Wooden slats now seamlessly connect the floors, creating an open and inviting staircase. Despite navigating through permit restrictions, Butler Armsden meticulously carved out space, removing unnecessary elements, and in some cases reducing the square footage, to expand the home's footprint.

The interiors were crafted with the couple's unpretentious preferences and lifestyle in mind. The design - minimalistic, functional, and thoughtful - is exactly what the clients envisioned. Walnut wood is consistent throughout the home providing continuity to every corner of the house and floor-to-ceiling windows adorn the walls, offering views of the surrounding city. This home is the epitome of traditional European living meets Bay Area innovation.
