In the redesign of the Ronald McDonald House at Stanford, a collaboration between Butler Armsden’s Associate Principal Reba Jones, an in-house design team, and Clayton Timbrell & Company, Inc. resulted in a series of comforting, unique, and inspiring spaces. Part of a team selected in 2015 to help the Ronald McDonald House overhaul and expand its facilities, we were tasked with creating four new rooms as part of the “Where Hope Has a Home” campaign. The Youth and Toddler rooms invite play and interaction with their bright colors, bold geometry, and a cluster of pebble-shaped soft seats. In the Meeting and Reading rooms, a variety of textures — soft velvet, plush shag, spiky air plants — combine with a rich and warm color palette to invite visitors to relax. The result is a space that embraces and soothes the young patients and their families who stay there, and we were grateful for the opportunity to work on this special project.
